The Universal Language That Should Be Embedded In
Every Single School, Workplace, Public Sector and Home.

Nervous System Literacy

The universal language for how the body responds to stress and safety and to recognise what lies beyond the words by observing how nervous system states are expressed through voice, physiology, behaviour and human connection and to use simple, practical tools to return to regulation even in the presence of pressure, stress and challenge.
Most schools, workplaces, public services and families already have something in place:
  • Schools already have behaviour policies and pastoral support.
  • Workplaces already have leadership training and wellbeing programmes.
  • Public services already have procedures for exactly this moment.
  • Families are already doing their best, with no manual at all.
And still, the same patterns keep showing up: the escalation nobody saw coming, the resignation that seemed to come from nowhere, the meltdown at 6pm, the child who shuts down before anyone notices.
That gap has a name

Nervous System Literacy.

What Is Nervous System Literacy?

By observing how nervous system states are expressed through voice, physiology, behaviour and human connection, Nervous System Literacy equips people to recognise what words alone cannot reveal. This enables them to respond to the person, not just the presentation.

Our methodology is designed to make Nervous System Literacy practical, memorable and actionable, rather than teaching theory alone with our easy to use frameworks. We provide a series of interconnected frameworks that help people recognise, understand and respond to nervous system states in everyday life creating a shared language that runs consistently through every school, workplace, public service and home.

Embodied Awareness.

Learning to name what’s actually happening in the body from creating consistency in communication, decision-making and everyday practice.

Protective States.

Understanding that fight, flight and freeze are intelligent survival responses not personal flaws or character failings.

Regulation, Not Calm.

Regulation isn’t about staying quiet or relaxed all the time. It’s about building the capacity to handle real pressure in a classroom, a control room, a boardroom or a living room without losing yourself in it. Nervous System Literacy also means noticing what’s happening in the moment, so people get to choose how they respond, rather than automatically react often with destructive consequences.

Why MW Legacy Group

MW Legacy Group takes its name from the two initials that matter most to its founder, Caroline Strawson:

M for Madeleine, W for William.

Not a slogan or rebrand. Just the two people she was rebuilding her life for, at the exact moment the systems that were supposed to help her didn’t have the answers. Caroline survived domestic abuse and coercive control. She lost her home. She was £70,000 in debt, rebuilding a life and an identity from nothing, navigating services that were meant to protect her and too often didn’t know how. What she was missing wasn’t more information about what had happened to her. It was a way to understand what it had done to her nervous system and what to do about it.

11 mental health and chronic illnesses to zero!!!

She became her own cycle breaker. Then she built the businesses that would help others break that cycle.

Nervous System Literacy,

taught in plain language, embedded as a practical skill rather than left as a theory.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE LANGUAGE CHANGES?

“The data tells only part of the story. Behind every percentage is a child who feels safer, more understood and more able to access learning. The training, coaching and support from Caroline Strawson and The Mental Wellbeing Company have been invaluable in helping us translate neuroscience into everyday practice and create a culture where regulation, relationships and learning are interconnected.”

“The courses didn't just teach the frameworks, they supported my own healing and regulation throughout the process. Once qualified, I gained access to an incredibly comprehensive suite of resources that helped me rapidly establish and grow my new business. My turnover in March 2026 has surpassed my former Head Teacher salary, and building a sustainable six‑figure business now feels completely achievable.”

Nick WhitehouseFormer Head Teacher, Franchise Partner (joined 2025)

“I delivered SMS improvements within the organisation bringing in a trauma informed lens, thinking about the customer, their experience, transparency and the relevant touchpoints throughout the customer journey resulted in an efficiency saving of over £1million. Insight has shown improved customer experience and journey, receiving the right information at the right time through clear communication. Calls received from customers since the SMS improvements have reduced by over 40% allowing staff to be more productive elsewhere.
Using my trauma informed lens that I learnt, I improved a business process that impacts many staff and customers, the improvements increased outcomes from 65% to 83% which significantly impacted customer satisfaction, staff performance and productivity. Staff feedback was that the improvements were received positively and took more account of the person within the process.”

Where Nervous System Literacy Belongs

We believe Nervous system literacy is the shared universal language that should be embedded everywhere because it changes everything.

Workplace

Every business challenge eventually becomes a nervous system challenge. Absenteeism, high turnover, poor decision-making under pressure, conflict that never quite gets resolved and these are rarely failures of skill or intention. They’re capacity problems wearing a performance-management disguise.

Public Sector Services

Consider changing to People working across the emergency services, healthcare and other critical public sector roles make high-stakes decisions every day, often under intense pressure and often at a moment their own nervous system is least equipped to support clear judgement. Nervous system literacy closes the gap between what policy says should happen and what is actually happening on the ground.

Schools

Potentially add a sentence about teachers: A child who cannot sit still and a child who has gone completely silent may be experiencing the same underlying nervous system response, expressed in opposite ways. The same is true for a teacher experiencing stress, overwhelm or burnout. Nervous system literacy gives every pupil and every adult in the education environment, the language to recognise what is happening, respond more effectively and understand their own state, helping to create a safer and more effective school environment.

Home

Most of us were never taught to read our own nervous system, let alone our child’s or partners. This is where cycles either repeat or break and nervous system literacy is how you make sure it’s the latter.
